What It Costs to Meet Cyber Insurance Requirements in Dallas: MFA, EDR and Backup Pricing (2026)

Last updated: October 29, 2026. Written by Pete Rullman, CTO at Uprite Services.

TL;DR Meeting a cyber insurer’s control list costs a Dallas business about $8 to $55 per user per month at 2026 list prices. The low end is Microsoft licenses and backup. The high end adds people who read the alerts. For 50 users that’s $382 to $2,732 a month. Fund MFA and backups first, then EDR. The policy itself often costs less than the controls.

Meeting cyber insurance requirements in Dallas costs about $8 to $55 per user per month at 2026 list prices, covering MFA, EDR, email filtering and backups. The top of that range includes someone who answers the alerts.

Renewal season turns every Dallas owner into a buyer of security software. The insurer sends a questionnaire, and each yes on it has a price. Here’s the cost to meet cyber insurance requirements, line by line, so you can see the number before you sign the application. If you haven’t started yet, read our cyber insurance readiness guide for Dallas-Fort Worth first.

This post prices only the controls insurers ask about. The whole security budget is a different animal, and our Dallas cybersecurity cost breakdown covers all 6 lines of it. I’m the CTO at Uprite, so I’ll say up front that we sell some of what’s priced below. I’ve kept the numbers to published list prices anyone can check.

What does it cost to meet cyber insurance requirements?

The cost to meet cyber insurance requirements is the monthly price of the controls an insurer checks before it quotes a policy. For most small and mid-sized Dallas businesses that means MFA, endpoint detection and response, email filtering and tested backups, plus someone to watch the alerts.

Three setups cover almost every quote you’ll see. Same controls, different amounts of human attention.

SetupWhat’s in itPer user, per month25 users50 users100 users
Licenses only, free MFADefender for Business at $3.00, Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 at $2.00, Microsoft 365 backup at $2.63, MFA through Microsoft security defaults$7.63$191$382$763
Licenses with policy-based MFAEverything above plus Entra ID P1 at $7.00 for Conditional Access$14.63$366$732$1,463
Licenses plus monitoringEverything above plus Uprite’s managed security tier, which starts at $40 per user$54.63$1,366$2,732$5,463

Prices are Microsoft, Veeam and Uprite list prices checked October 29, 2026, billed annually. Servers, laptops and non-Microsoft SaaS data add backup cost that’s priced by the terabyte, not the seat. Read the table as a floor.

Is the first row a real option? For a 25-person office with no regulated data and a modest policy, yes. I’d still never leave alerts unread. That’s the gap the third row closes.

Which controls do insurers actually ask for?

Almost every application asks about MFA, endpoint detection, email filtering, backups, patching and incident response. Marsh says insurers have taken a more cautious stance, requiring specific cybersecurity controls with insurability at stake.

ControlWhat a form tends to askCheapest credible routeList price
MFAIs it enforced for every user, or only admins?Microsoft security defaults, or Entra ID P1 when you need exceptions$0, or $7.00 per user per month
EDRIs it on every endpoint and server?Defender for Business, or CrowdStrike Falcon Go$3.00 per user per month, or $59.99 per device per year
Email filteringAre links and attachments scanned?Defender for Office 365 Plan 1$2.00 per user per month
BackupsAre copies offline or immutable, and restore-tested?Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365, plus server backup quoted by the terabyte$2.63 per user per month for Microsoft 365 data
Awareness trainingDo you run phishing simulations?Defender for Office 365 Plan 2$5.00 per user per month
Monitoring and responseDoes someone watch alerts around the clock?A managed security providerFrom $40 per user per month at Uprite

Pricing sources are Microsoft’s pages for Entra ID, Defender for Business and Defender for Office 365, along with CrowdStrike and Veeam. Duo’s Essentials and Advantage plans run $3 and $6 per user if you’d rather not use Microsoft for the second factor.

What’s the real MFA cost for a small business?

Close to nothing at first. Microsoft’s security defaults require MFA for every user and every admin at no added license cost.

Then the exceptions show up. A shared mailbox. A scanner that sends email. A vendor who needs a login for 2 weeks. Security defaults are all or nothing, so the day you need a rule, you need Conditional Access, and that starts at Entra ID P1. $7.00 per user per month.

Microsoft says MFA blocks over 99.2% of identity-based attacks. Marsh McLennan’s 2023 research is less flattering. Organizations with MFA across critical data, remote access and admin accounts were 1.4 times less likely to suffer a successful attack, and the same study found automated hardening did far more. So half-deployed MFA is the worst deal in the stack. You pay for it, and you can’t honestly check the box.

EDR cost per endpoint, and who answers the alert?

EDR costs $3.00 per user per month with Defender for Business, or $59.99 per device per year with CrowdStrike Falcon Go, which works out to about $5.00 a month. The license is the cheap part. The alert is the expensive part.

Think about 2 a.m. on a Sunday. A tool flags a laptop that’s encrypting files. Who’s awake? If the honest answer is nobody until Monday, the control exists on paper and nowhere else. An unread alert is just a log file.

That’s why the monitoring row sits in the table at all. Uprite’s managed security tier covers SIEM and SOC monitoring, vulnerability scanning and incident response from $40 per user, and our average first response is 5 minutes across every client. If you want the monitoring side explained, our page on managed security services in Dallas goes through it.

What do backups cost, and what will an insurer accept?

Microsoft 365 backup costs $2.63 per user per month at Veeam’s Foundation tier, $3.33 with Entra ID data added. Servers and workstations are priced by the terabyte. Insurers want copies an attacker can’t delete, and proof you’ve restored from them.

Don’t lean on Microsoft’s own retention. Deleted email is recoverable for 14 days by default and 30 at most, and browser-deleted SharePoint files for 93. Fine for a clumsy afternoon. Not fine for ransomware discovered in week 6.

The question that trips owners up is restore speed. Can you say how many hours a full restore takes? We publish ours, and the physics isn’t kind.

Data to restore100 Mbps line500 Mbps line1 Gbps LAN
1 TB27.8 hours5.6 hours2.8 hours
10 TB11.6 days55.6 hours27.8 hours
25 TB28.9 days5.8 days2.9 days

These assume 80% of rated line speed and come from our data backup services page. A local appliance beats the cloud every time for the first restore. For the bigger picture, see our guide to disaster recovery in Dallas.

How much will your premium actually change?

Probably less than you hope. Insureon reports its small business customers pay an average of $129 a month, or $1,552 a year, with annual premiums running from about $400 to over $8,000. And 41% pay under $100 a month. Most of those customers have fewer than 5 employees, so a 50-person firm should expect to land higher.

Market-wide, Marsh’s Q3 2026 index shows US cyber rates were flat after an extended period of declines, while global cyber pricing fell 4% for a 13th straight quarter.

I haven’t seen a carrier publish a discount schedule for each control, so be wary of any article that quotes one. What controls decide is whether you get a quote at all.

Run the math for 50 users on the middle tier. $732 a month is $8,778 a year, more than 5 times that $1,552 average premium. I’m not saying that to scare you off. Nobody buys MFA to save money on a policy. You buy it to stay insurable and to avoid a claim you can’t collect. IBM’s 2026 report puts the global average breach at $4.99 million.

What happens if an application answer isn’t true?

The insurer can try to rescind the policy after a claim. In Travelers v. International Control Services, filed in July 2022, Travelers sued to void a $1 million policy for a 150-employee manufacturer that had answered yes on MFA for privileged access, then reported ransomware. Travelers said MFA wasn’t on its servers.

The wording was arguably ambiguous. That’s the lesson. An answer you believe is true can still cost you the policy if your systems say otherwise. Before you sign, have someone who runs the environment read every yes. Our guide to the cyber insurance application covers the questions, and our renewal checklist for Dallas-Fort Worth turns them into a working list.

Which setup fits which Dallas business?

The right tier depends on headcount, who runs IT today and what your clients or regulators already demand.

  • Under 12 people and no regulated data. Row 1, done properly, with a restore test on the calendar.
  • You have an internal IT person who’s stretched thin. Keep them, and add managed security at $40 per user so someone else carries the 2 a.m. alerts.
  • No IT staff at all. Fully managed IT starts at $138 per user per month, licensing extra, and folds security tools, monitoring and backup testing into one price. The line items above stop being line items.
  • Defense or manufacturing contracts. Insurance is the lesser problem. Start with our CMMC compliance in Dallas page.

One more honest take. If you run a 5-person firm with a $1,000 policy, row 1 is the job. Don’t let anyone sell you 24/7 monitoring to satisfy a form that doesn’t ask for it. I benefit when you buy more. The math says otherwise.

What should you fund first?

If the budget only stretches so far, spend in this order.

  1. MFA enforced for every account, admins first.
  2. Backups you’ve restored once, with a stopwatch.
  3. EDR on every laptop and server, not most of them.
  4. Email filtering. It’s $2.00, so there’s no excuse.
  5. Someone watching the alerts.
  6. Phishing training, ideally by the next renewal.

Monitoring sits fifth because it only matters once the tools above it exist. After that, it matters most.

Questions Dallas Owners Ask Before Renewal

What’s the real MFA cost for a small business?

Zero to $7.00 per user per month on Microsoft. Security defaults are free, and Entra ID P1 adds Conditional Access for $7.00. Duo runs $3 to $6 per user.

EDR cost per endpoint, what should I expect?

Short answer, $3.00 to $5.00 per month. Defender for Business is $3.00 per user, and CrowdStrike Falcon Go is $59.99 per device per year.

Budget separately for whoever reads the alerts. That’s usually the bigger line.

Will any of this lower my premium?

Don’t count on it. Controls mostly decide whether you get a quote and whether a claim gets paid, not how much you save. US cyber rates were flat in Q3 2026, and carriers rarely publish per-control discounts.

What happens if I answer yes and it isn’t true?

Your insurer can challenge the policy after a claim. In 2022 Travelers sued to rescind a $1 million policy over an MFA answer.

Have your IT provider verify every yes. A confident guess isn’t a control, and it’s the part of this process people skip when they’re in a hurry to get the form back.

How much does a 50-person Dallas company spend in a year?

$4,578 to $32,778 at list price. The low figure is licenses with free MFA. The high figure adds Uprite’s $40 managed security tier. Servers and non-Microsoft data add backup cost on top.

Can I stagger the spend across 2 budget cycles?

Yes, if you sequence it. MFA, tested backups and EDR go in the first cycle. Monitoring and training can follow. Tell your broker the plan in writing, though, and don’t answer yes to anything that isn’t live on the day you sign.
