The Application Gap

Every Yes on Your Application Is a Statement You Signed

Somebody at your company signed a cyber insurance application, maybe the owner or maybe the CFO between two other things, and the answers on it were probably given from memory rather than read off an admin console.

Most started as yeses.

Is MFA required for email, remote access, and every admin account? Yes. Is EDR on every laptop and server? Yes. Are backups tested? Yes, they run every night. Each answer is mostly true, and mostly is where the trouble lives, because the form asks about all of it while a console only reports what’s actually enrolled. Mostly isn’t enough.

If your cyber insurance application was answered from memory, nobody has checked those answers since.

The policy only works if the answers hold up.

Reporting on Travelers v. International Control Services, filed in federal court in Illinois in July 2022, says the insurer asked to void a policy because the MFA described on the application covered only the firewall. The company stipulated to rescission, and the policy was voided from inception. We break down how denials like that unfold in cyber insurance claim denials in DFW.

Who checked that answer last month? Can anyone produce the report that proves it? If an adjuster called tomorrow, how long would it take to find the dated record?

That last question is where most DFW owners go quiet. It isn’t carelessness. Nobody was ever assigned the job.

The Claims Data

Insurers Already Know Which Controls Matter, and by How Much

Marsh McLennan paired its proprietary cyber claims data with self-assessment answers from individual organizations, then ranked 12 control categories by how strongly each one tracks with fewer successful incidents. Its April 2023 report is one of the few public looks at what underwriters see.

Four findings stand out.

Nearly 6x

less likely to have a cyber incident for organizations using automated hardening, the control with the biggest effect in the data.

1.4x

less likely to suffer a successful attack when MFA is broadly implemented. Breadth is the operative word.

2x

drop in the probability of a cyber event when high-severity vulnerabilities are patched within 7 days.

24%

of organizations in the data met that 7-day patching mark, so a yes on the form deserves a second look.

Treat the multiples as direction, not a quote. Marsh studied its own clients in 2023. The direction held up in the NAIC’s 2025 cyber insurance report, which says controls are looked upon favorably by underwriters. It doesn’t put a discount on them, and neither will we.

Broad beats partial.

That’s the whole job. Finish each control across every account and device, then keep the record that proves it.

Readiness vs Everything Else

Your Broker, Your Insurer, and Your IT Provider Each See One Slice

Three parties touch your cyber policy. Nobody has the whole picture.

Your broker places the coverage and reads the form for paperwork gaps. The insurer prices whatever you tell it. Your IT provider runs the systems, often without ever seeing the application, and nobody is assigned to hold the form up against the consoles and say which answers would survive a claim.

CISA’s guidance on requiring MFA tells businesses to confirm that all remote access and all privileged or administrative access requires it, calls any MFA better than none, and ranks texted codes as the weakest option. So a yes on the application can mean a security key on every admin account or a texted code on one shared mailbox. Same word. Very different protection.

A yes isn’t a measurement.

Price is the other thing nobody lays out. Our look at cyber insurance requirements and cost in Dallas puts numbers next to each control, and our breakdown of cybersecurity cost in Dallas prices the tools around them.

The gaps are usually ordinary, like an admin account nobody remembers, a few laptops that never got the EDR agent, or a backup job that reports success every night and has never once been restored. Carriers ask about every one of those.

That’s the gap readiness closes.

What We Check

The Controls We Check, What We Fix, and the Record We Keep

With cyber insurance readiness services in Dallas-Fort Worth, an outside security team reviews every control your application mentions, closes the gaps it finds, and keeps dated records of each fix, so the answers you sign match what your systems show.

In DFW, this usually lands on one desk with a date attached, whether it’s an insurance renewal or a customer security questionnaire that’s due in two weeks and has no obvious owner.

The Dallas Regional Chamber counts 24 Fortune 500 headquarters in the region on the 2026 list, and the suppliers that sell to them inherit those security reviews. The renewal form and the customer review ask nearly the same questions, so one set of records can answer both.

Here’s the list we work through, what we do when a control fails the check, and the record that goes in your file. It follows the same short list CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide gives every organization, and it lines up with the eight controls in our guide to the cyber insurance application.

ControlWhat we check and fixRecord we file
Multi-factor authenticationChecks every sign-in path, including email, VPN, admin, and service accounts, then enforces MFA and names any account that can’t enrollMFA coverage report with every exception listed
Endpoint detection and responseCompares agents on devices against your asset list and deploys managed EDR where it’s missingDevice export that matches your asset count
Backups and restoresChecks that copies are isolated, then restores a sample to see whether the data comes backDated restore test showing what came back and how long it took
PatchingSets a written window for critical fixes and measures it, firewall and VPN appliances includedPatch compliance report
Email securityReviews inbound filtering and whether your domain is authenticated against spoofingFilter policy and your published domain records
Security trainingRuns awareness training and phishing testsCompletion records by employee and simulation results
Admin accessSeparates admin accounts from daily logins and reviews who holds them each quarterAdmin list with an owner and a review date
Incident response planWrites a runbook that names people and steps, then rehearses itThe plan and the date of the last tabletop

Control themes follow the application questions in our cyber insurance application guide and CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide.

Records matter outside the insurance file too, because a customer’s security review, a notice to the Texas Attorney General, and a lawsuit all open with the same question about what was in place and when.

An undated control is a claim. A dated record is evidence.

Dated beats declared.

Pricing

What Cyber Insurance Readiness Costs in Dallas-Fort Worth

So what does readiness cost?

Readiness is delivered through our managed security plans, and the plans carry published prices. The MSSP Security Focus plan begins at $40 per user per month and suits companies that already have an internal IT person or team. Fully Managed IT starts at $138 per user per month for companies handing us the whole IT department. At $40, a 60-person company begins at $2,400 a month. That’s the floor, and the controls review sets the real number.

When you can skip us. If your broker walks you through the application every year and your IT team already files dated evidence for each control above, keep that process and pay for help only on the gaps. One more thing. Turn on MFA everywhere before you buy anything else, from us or from anyone.

Your plan decides who runs the environment day to day. Here’s how three of them line up against the work above.

How Our Plans Line Up With Readiness Work

PlanStarting priceWhat it brings to your application answersBuilt for
MSSP Security Focus$40 per user per monthSIEM and SOC monitoring with incident response and compliance automation, plus quarterly security reviewsCompanies with in-house IT that wants security layered on top
Fully Managed IT$138 per user per monthFull visibility with after-hours response, on-site work includedCompanies replacing the whole IT department
Co-Managed IT$100 per user per month24/7 support availability, coordinated with your internal staffInternal IT teams wanting support, coverage, and planning help

These details come from our pricing page, which also lists the remote-only plans.

Rates are per user per month, and Microsoft licensing is billed separately. Pick the plan by who runs your environment, not by the form. The controls review comes first either way.

Hold your application up against your consoles.

We’ll show you where the two disagree before we quote anything.

Getting Started

How a Readiness Engagement Works

Fixing controls sounds like a project that stalls the office, with pop-ups and password resets and a rollout that lands squarely in renewal season when everyone in the building is already busy.

Most DFW owners put this off for exactly that reason, then hit a deadline anyway. If yours is close, our cyber insurance renewal checklist for DFW businesses lays out what to gather first.

So we sequenced the work around the calendar. The first step touches nothing.

Step 1. Controls Review

We read your identity settings, MFA coverage, endpoint agents, email configuration, admin access, backup integrity, and response plan against the questions an application asks. It’s read-only and no-cost, and you keep the document whether or not you hire us.

Step 2. Gap List

You get a ranked list of what doesn’t match, ordered by how hard each answer would be to defend. It marks which fixes are settings changes, which need a maintenance window, and which a vendor has to touch.

Step 3. Close the Gaps

EDR, MFA, and email filtering usually go first, and we’ve finished that layer in under 2 weeks when a client’s deadline required it, while a full managed security program onboards over 30 to 60 days.

Step 4. Keep the Evidence Current

Dated evidence gets filed every quarter, so the next renewal means pulling records instead of rebuilding them from scratch. No scramble.

Fit Check

Who This Is Built For

This is built for
Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Irving, Arlington, and Frisco companies with a renewal date inside the next 12 months
Owners and CFOs who sign the application and aren’t sure every yes would survive a claim
Companies whose biggest customer sends a security questionnaire with a deadline attached
Firms with an internal IT person who wants the controls verified and the evidence organized
Businesses that were asked about MFA, EDR, or backups at renewal and answered from memory

If a few of these sound like you, a conversation is worth an hour.

Dental and medical practices, financial firms, and law firms often answer a second questionnaire on top of the carrier’s. Our pages on healthcare IT services in Dallas and financial services cybersecurity in Dallas cover those rules, and this work sits alongside them.

Before You Start

What Usually Holds Owners Back

You probably know the form deserves a second look. Something else holds most owners back, and these 4 objections come up more than any others.

“My broker already handles this.”

Your broker places the policy and checks the form for paperwork gaps, but brokers don’t log into your consoles, so try a narrower question about who confirmed that MFA covers every admin account and when. If the honest answer is that IT said so, that’s the claim we verify.

“We already answered the application.”

Then you’ve already made statements about your systems. Renewal asks again, and the carrier can read last year’s answers if a claim comes in, which is why checking now, while nothing’s wrong, costs less than finding out afterward.

“Will this lower our premium?”

We won’t promise that. NAIC’s 2025 report says underwriters look favorably on these controls, and nothing we’d trust says by how much. What we do promise is accurate answers backed by dated records.

“Our IT person can do this at renewal time.”

Maybe. Turning controls on isn’t the hard part. Finding the exceptions is, like the admin nobody remembers or the server outside the EDR scope, and the person who built the environment is the one least likely to spot them. We work beside internal IT teams all the time, and a second read of the consoles is usually welcome.

In Writing

What We Commit To, and What Stays With You

Anyone can promise readiness. Here’s what we put on paper, with the definitions attached, because a number without its definition can’t be checked.

What you getOur published figureWhat it means
Controls reviewRead-only and no-costYou keep the document whether or not you hire us
First response5-minute averageAn average across all priority levels, taken from our ticket data, so treat it as a benchmark and not a per-alert commitment
Evidence filingQuarterlyDated records filed every quarter, so renewal pulls from a current file
Fast-start controlsEDR, MFA, and email filtering in under 2 weeks when a deadline requires itWe’ve worked to that clock before. A full managed security program onboards over 30 to 60 days
Satisfaction terms120 daysLeave the contract in the first 120 days if you’re not satisfied
Rate lockFirst 12 monthsYour rate stays flat through year one

These 3 terms matter more than any promise on a web page. Ask every provider for each one in writing, ours included.

Who Signs the Application

An officer of your company signs it, not us and not your IT provider, and we supply the records that let that person sign with confidence while anyone offering to certify controls they haven’t checked is selling you a problem.

A Record for Every Control

Each control gets a dated record, such as a coverage report, a device export, or a restore test, with exceptions named, and that record is what answers an adjuster, so a control without one doesn’t count. No record, no credit.

No Premium Promises

We don’t promise a lower rate, a faster approval, or a claim outcome. We promise answers that match your systems, and records that show it. Ask any provider that guarantees more where the guarantee is written. Put it in writing.

I had been having trouble with an IT matter that I didn't think would be fixed but Arvin Ebueng from Upright took his time with me and worked with me until we were able to resolve the issue. The issue was an internal issue with the way the program was written, but Arvin came up with a great work around so that I am now able to do what I need to do at my job. Long story short, he got me access to both things that I need access to simultaneously and daily. Thanks 😊 Arvin, you are much appreciated 👏 💐 🥳.

FAQ

What DFW Businesses Ask First

What are cyber insurance readiness services?

Cyber insurance readiness services compare your application’s security answers with what your systems actually show, fix the controls that fall short, and keep dated records of each one. The goal is an application you can sign and defend after a claim. It isn’t insurance, and Uprite isn’t an insurer.

Which controls do insurers ask about most?

MFA, EDR, tested backups, patching, email security, training, an incident response plan, and limited admin access are the usual eight, though wording shifts by carrier. Our cyber insurance application guide shows typical questions and the proof for each one.

How long does readiness take?

EDR, MFA, and email filtering can be live in under 2 weeks when a deadline forces it, and a full managed security program onboards over 30 to 60 days. The controls review comes first, so you get a realistic date once we’ve seen your environment.

What does it cost?

MSSP Security Focus starts at $40 per user per month and Fully Managed IT at $138, per our published price sheet. The controls review sets your actual quote. At $40, a 60-person company starts at $2,400 a month.

Will this lower my premium?

We don’t promise a lower premium, and NAIC’s 2025 report says only that underwriters look favorably on strong controls without setting a discount. What we can promise is that each answer on your application matches a dated record.

Do you sign or certify our application?

No, an officer of your company signs the application, and we supply the records behind each answer. If a vendor offers to certify controls it hasn’t checked, ask where its evidence is.

What if our application is already signed?

Run the controls review anyway, because it tells you whether any answer is shaky before a renewal or a claim does. If something’s off, fix the control first and ask your broker how to correct the record.

Does Texas law make this worth doing?

SB 2610 shields Texas businesses with fewer than 250 employees from exemplary damages after a breach when they ran a documented program matching a recognized framework. It’s separate from insurance, but the same dated records support both.

Do you serve Fort Worth and the rest of DFW?

Yes, our Dallas office is at 5757 Alpha Road, Suite 530, and we support companies in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, Irving, Arlington, Richardson, and Garland. Fort Worth companies can read more about our cybersecurity services in Fort Worth.

What if we’re not satisfied?

You can leave the contract within the first 120 days if you’re not satisfied, and your rate is locked for the first 12 months. We don’t charge hidden fees.

Find the Gaps Before Your Insurer Does

Every renewal asks you to restate what’s true about your systems.

In Marsh’s data, broad MFA and fast patching sat among the controls tied to fewer incidents. The work that earns a yes on the form is the same work that stops the attack, so book a review and we’ll show you exactly where your answers and your consoles disagree.

The question isn’t whether your application says yes.

It’s whether your records say it too.
