The Supplier Squeeze

Your Customer’s Security Requirements Just Became Your IT Problem

San Antonio manufacturing does not look like one giant plant. It looks like roughly 1,600 companies, most of them small, feeding a handful of very large ones.

Toyota anchors the South Side. International Motors builds trucks off Applewhite Road. JCB is bringing a $500 million facility online. Port San Antonio runs 1,900 acres of aerospace and defense work. Those names get the headlines. What surrounds them is the actual employment base: machine shops, injection molders, harness builders, powder coaters, and fabricators running 30 to 200 people on two or three shifts.

That is where the pressure lands.

When a large customer tightens its cybersecurity requirements, the requirement does not stay at the customer. It travels down the purchase order. A supplier quality engineer emails over a security questionnaire, or a contract renewal shows up with a new appendix, and a 40-person shop with one part-time IT person has ninety days to prove it runs multi-factor authentication, segmented networks, tested backups, and a written incident response plan.

Nobody at that shop has ever been asked any of this before.

If your managed IT services in San Antonio provider treats your plant like an office with louder equipment, the questionnaire is going to expose that fast. So will the first ransomware event.

When did you last test a restore, all the way back to a running system? Who has remote access into your machine controllers right now, and when was that list reviewed? If the ERP went dark at 6 a.m. on a Monday, who would you call, and how long would they take to pick up?

Most plants cannot answer all three. That is not incompetence. It is what happens when IT quietly becomes the responsibility of whoever on staff is best with computers.

IT vs OT

Why a Plant Is Not Just an Office With Machines in It

A 60-person insurance agency and a 60-person machine shop both need email, WiFi, and endpoint protection. After that the two diverge fast.

The office network can be patched on a Tuesday afternoon. The production network cannot. A CNC controller running an unsupported Windows build is not a security failure to be lectured about. It is a $400,000 machine whose builder certified exactly one operating system and will walk away from the support contract if you change it.

That constraint is the whole job, and most IT providers never learn it. They see an unpatched box and want to patch it. You see the machine that pays for the building.

The scale of the threat is not in dispute. Dragos tracked 119 ransomware groups hitting industrial organizations in 2025, up 49% from 80 the year before, with more than 3,300 industrial organizations affected. Manufacturing accounted for more than two thirds of the victims, according to the Dragos 2026 OT Cybersecurity Year in Review.

The more useful findings are further down that report. In 81% of the OT assessments Dragos ran, IT and OT network segmentation was inadequate. Only 46% had adequate OT network monitoring deployed. And 30% of incident response cases began as an unexplained operational problem that nobody on site recognized as a cyber event.

Read that last one twice.

Nearly a third of the time, the first symptom was not an alert. It was a line acting strange, and someone rebooting a panel to see if that fixed it.

That is why plant IT is a different job, not a bigger version of the same one.

We wrote a longer technical breakdown of how Texas plants actually get compromised, including the industrial DMZ pattern we use, in our guide to manufacturing cybersecurity in Texas.

The Requirements

What Manufacturing IT in San Antonio Actually Requires

Manufacturing IT services in San Antonio provide managed technology support across both the office and the plant floor. That covers ERP and MES systems, shop floor and OT networks, industrial control equipment, cybersecurity, backup and disaster recovery, and the documentation manufacturers need for customer audits and compliance reviews.

Here is what a plant actually needs from an IT partner, roughly in the order it tends to matter.

A Segmented Plant Network

Production traffic separated from the office VLAN with controlled, monitored crossings. Not a flat network where a phishing click in accounts payable can reach a PLC three buildings away.

ERP and MES That Stay Up

SAP, Epicor, NetSuite, Sage 500, and Fishbowl Inventory supported as production systems rather than as another line-of-business app. Slow ERP at shift change is a scheduling problem, not a ticket.

Controlled Vendor Remote Access

Machine builders and integrators need to dial in. That access should be brokered, named, time-limited, and logged, not a permanent tunnel somebody opened during a commissioning project in 2019.

Backups You Have Actually Restored

Immutable, offsite, and tested on a schedule. A backup nobody has ever restored is a hypothesis. See our San Antonio disaster recovery approach.

Shop Floor Endpoints and Shared Terminals

Kiosk logins, badge access, and shift-worker accounts handled properly, so the terminal at the press brake is not running on a shared password taped to the monitor bezel.

Audit-Ready Documentation

Network diagrams, asset inventories, access reviews, and policy records you can hand to a customer’s supplier quality team without a three-week scramble and a weekend.

On top of that sits the compliance layer, and in San Antonio it arrives from more directions than most manufacturers expect. NIST Cybersecurity Framework language shows up in customer contracts. Defense work brings CMMC and NIST 800-171. Export-controlled parts bring ITAR. Enterprise customers ask for ISO alignment. Cyber insurers now underwrite on controls rather than revenue, and Texas SB 2610 offers a safe harbor to businesses that maintain a recognized cybersecurity program.

One more thing worth knowing if you build things in this city. CyManII, the Department of Energy institute created specifically to secure American manufacturing, is led by UTSA and headquartered here. Your customers’ auditors are reading research written a few miles from your building. See CyManII for what that work covers.

Most IT providers are not lying when they say they handle manufacturing. They just mean the front office.

The Program

Uprite MFG℠ and the Four Ways Plants Buy It

We did not build a manufacturing offering because it looked good on a slide. We built it because plants kept breaking our standard playbook, usually in the same three places: maintenance windows, machine vendors, and headcount that moves.

Full disclosure. We sell this, so we have a financial interest in you picking us. What we will not do is tell a plant with a competent internal IT person that the person needs replacing. Usually they do not. They need depth behind them and someone else carrying the 2 a.m. phone.

The four Uprite MFG℠ engagement models

ModelWhat it coversWho it suits
Uprite MFG Complete℠Fully managed IT across office and plant: help desk, systems management, cybersecurity, monitoring, and machine vendor coordination.Manufacturers with no internal IT staff who want one accountable partner.
Uprite MFG rComplete℠Remote-delivered management: monitoring, patching, cloud and identity administration, and remote support.Distributed operations, warehouses, and sites with light on-premise infrastructure.
Uprite MFG Impact℠Co-managed IT alongside your internal team, with shared responsibility defined in writing so nothing sits in a gap.Plants with one or two IT staff who need coverage, tooling, and escalation depth.
Uprite MFG Secure℠Security and compliance layer: vCISO guidance, control implementation, audit evidence, and customer questionnaire support.Suppliers under customer, contract, or supply chain security requirements.

Every model includes risk review, incident response planning, and documentation built to survive a customer audit. What changes between them is who does the work, not how seriously the work gets taken.

Why per-user pricing fails in a plant

This matters more in manufacturing than in any other industry we serve. Most MSPs price per named user. Plants do not have named users in that sense. They have three shifts sharing eleven terminals, seasonal headcount for a big run, and turnover that would wreck a per-seat contract inside a quarter.

We price by position rather than by person. Staff up for a launch and the quote does not double. That is a small structural detail that shows up on every invoice for the length of the agreement. Full pricing detail is on our pricing page.

By the Numbers

San Antonio Manufacturing IT by the Numbers

The San Antonio region employs roughly 61,000 people across about 1,600 manufacturing companies, producing $13.5 billion in manufacturing-driven regional GDP, up 27% since 2020, according to Greater:SATX. Toyota then added a $3.6 billion expansion and 2,000 jobs to its San Antonio campus.

Growth like that pulls the whole supplier network up with it. It also pulls the security requirements down.

$5.0M

Average cost of a data breach in the industrial sector in 2025, per IBM. Manufacturing has been the most attacked industry four years running.

119

Ransomware groups targeting industrial organizations in 2025, up 49% from 80 in 2024 (Dragos). More than two thirds of the victims were manufacturers.

81%

Share of Dragos OT assessments that found inadequate IT and OT network segmentation. The most common structural gap in plants, and among the most fixable.

5 min

Uprite average first response time across all priority levels. At shift change, that number is most of the conversation.

Getting Started

How Manufacturing IT Onboarding Works at Uprite

Changing IT providers when you are running production feels like a bad trade. The current setup is imperfect but known. The new one is unproven and touches everything.

That hesitation is reasonable, and it is where most manufacturers sit for about eighteen months before they call anyone. So the process is built to de-risk the first ninety days rather than to impress you in the first meeting.

Step 1. Walk the Floor

We start on the plant floor, not in the conference room. Asset inventory, network mapping, control cabinets, wireless coverage, vendor connections, and the machines nobody wants to talk about. Most of what matters is not in the documentation.

Step 2. Business Technology Assessment

A written assessment and roadmap before any quote. Gaps ranked by production risk, with an honest note on which ones can wait a year. You keep the document whether or not you hire us.

Step 3. Cutover Around Production

We schedule against your calendar. Office systems migrate live. Plant systems move only inside windows you approve, and nothing touches a controller without the machine builder in the loop.

Step 4. Run It

24/7 monitoring, patching on a schedule the plant signs off on, quarterly vCIO reviews tied to your production plan, and documentation kept current so the next customer audit is a file rather than a fire drill.

Could we take the accounts in the right-hand column? Probably. Would either side enjoy it? No.

Before You Switch

What Is Actually Stopping You from Switching

By the time a plant manager reads this far, the problem is usually already understood. Something else is holding up the decision. Here are the four objections we hear most, answered plainly.

“We cannot afford downtime for an IT project.”

Neither can we, because uptime is what we get measured on. The assessment happens before any cutover, and the cutover plan is built backward from your production schedule. Office-side work happens live. Plant-side work happens inside windows you approve. Most of our manufacturing onboardings cost zero unplanned production minutes.

“Our machines run old Windows. You are going to tell us to replace them.”

We are not. Scrapping a working machine because its controller runs a 2009 operating system is a capital decision, not an IT decision, and it is not ours to make. What we will do is isolate that controller, monitor it, and put controls around it so its age stops being a company-wide risk.

“We already have an IT person.”

Good. Keep them. Uprite MFG Impact℠ is co-managed, which means your person stops being a single point of failure and starts having a SOC, a patching pipeline, and someone to call at 2 a.m. In our experience the internal IT person is usually the one who wanted this first. See how co-managed IT in San Antonio is structured.

“A customer sent a security questionnaire and half of it is unreadable.”

That is the single most common reason a San Antonio manufacturer calls us. Forward it. We will map it against your current environment, tell you which answers you can already give truthfully, and price the rest. Answering it optimistically is the version of this that ends badly.

Coverage

Where We Work Across the San Antonio Industrial Corridors

Our San Antonio office is at 11831 Radium Street, and our field engineers cover the metro’s manufacturing geography rather than a radius on a map. That means the South Side plants along the Toyota corridor, the aerospace and defense tenants at Port San Antonio, the Northeast industrial parks around Selma and Universal City, and the I-35 belt running through Schertz, Cibolo, New Braunfels, and Seguin. We also serve Boerne, Converse, Live Oak, Von Ormy, and Pleasanton.

Three capabilities decide whether an IT partner is useful in a plant or just present in one.

Plant Network and OT Security

Segmentation between production and business networks, monitored crossings, brokered vendor access, OT asset inventory, and 24/7 SOC coverage that runs through the night shift. Backed by our San Antonio cybersecurity services.

ERP, MES, and Engineering Software

Day-to-day support for SAP, Epicor, NetSuite, Sage 500, and Fishbowl Inventory, plus Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor, and Vault for engineering teams. Performance, integrations, licensing, user access, and vendor coordination in one place.

Continuity for Always-On Production

Immutable backups with tested restores, hybrid and cloud hosting for ERP workloads, secure remote access for traveling staff and field service, and documented recovery objectives you agreed to rather than inherited.

If you are still deciding whether you need a manufacturing specialist at all, our statewide manufacturing IT services page covers the general case, and IT support in San Antonio covers the day-to-day side.

FAQ

What San Antonio Manufacturers Ask First

How much do manufacturing IT services cost in San Antonio?

Most San Antonio manufacturers land between $100 and $200 per user per month for a full-stack managed engagement. Fully managed IT starts at $138 per user per month and security-only support starts at $40. Plants often price differently because we bill by position rather than by named person, which matters when three shifts share the same terminals and headcount moves with the production schedule.

What is the difference between IT support and OT security?

IT covers the business side: email, laptops, servers, ERP, and the office network. OT covers production: PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, machine controllers, and the network they sit on. The two have opposite priorities. IT optimizes for confidentiality and patch speed. OT optimizes for availability and predictability, because an unplanned reboot is lost output. Securing a plant means respecting both sets of rules instead of forcing one onto the other.

Can you support our ERP and engineering software?

Yes. We support SAP, Epicor, NetSuite, Sage 500, and Fishbowl Inventory on the ERP and MES side, plus Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor, and Vault for engineering teams. Support covers performance, integrations, user access, licensing, vendor coordination, and the security configuration around each system.

Do you work with our machine builders and integrators?

Every week. Machine builders and system integrators need remote access to diagnose faults, and that access is one of the most common ways an attacker reaches a plant network. We broker it instead of leaving it open: named accounts, time-limited sessions, full logging, and approval on your side before the tunnel opens.

Can you help us answer a customer’s cybersecurity questionnaire?

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons a manufacturer calls us. We map the questionnaire against your current environment, tell you which answers are already true, and price the gap on the rest. For defense-related work we also handle CMMC and NIST 800-171 readiness, and we can produce the supporting evidence your customer will ask for next.

Will switching IT providers disrupt production?

It should not, and the plan is built specifically to avoid it. Office systems migrate live. Plant systems move only inside maintenance windows you approve, with the machine builder involved wherever a controller is touched. The assessment happens before any cutover, so surprises surface on paper rather than mid-project.

How fast do you respond when a line goes down?

5 minutes is our average first response time across all priority levels. Production-down issues escalate straight to an engineer who already knows your environment, with no phone tree and no Tier 1 screener reading from a script. Most issues resolve on first touch.

What if it does not work out?

120-day satisfaction guarantee. If you are not satisfied in the first four months you can exit the contract with no penalty. Your rate is also locked for the first year, so the number in the proposal is the number on the invoice twelve months later.

Find Out What Is Actually on Your Plant Network

Two things surprise almost every manufacturer we assess. How many devices are sitting on the production network that nobody put there deliberately, and how many remote access paths are still open from a commissioning project that ended years ago.

Neither is a crisis today. Both are how a bad week starts.

The assessment takes about a week, costs nothing, and you keep the written roadmap whether or not you hire us. If the answer is that your current provider is doing fine, we will say so.
