Managed Detection and Response in Houston, TX

Managed detection and response in Houston means a 24/7 team watches your laptops, servers, sign-ins, and email, decides which alerts are real, and contains a confirmed attack before it spreads. Uprite delivers it inside MSSP Security Focus from $40 per user per month. See our managed IT services in Houston or our cybersecurity services in Houston.

Why Houston Firms Look at MDR

Your Tools Raise Alerts. Who Reads Them at 3 AM?

Most breaches don’t start with a bang.

A stolen password gets used from a new city at 2 a.m. A laptop starts talking to a server nobody recognizes. A mailbox rule appears that forwards every invoice to an outside address. Each of those is a small event, and a security tool will flag each one, and then the flag sits in a console until Monday. The federal playbook treats this as its own discipline, because NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 gives detection a function of its own, covering continuous monitoring and the analysis of adverse events.

Tools aren’t the gap.

A 60-person Houston company can own endpoint protection, a firewall, and Microsoft 365 security licenses and still have nobody awake to read what they raise. Managed detection and response, or MDR, fills that seat. It’s a team of analysts who watch the alerts from your tools, decide which ones are real, and act on the confirmed ones, which is a different job from buying more software. Our EDR vs MDR vs XDR guide sorts out which acronym does what, and it’s worth five minutes before you compare quotes.

The record is worth a look too. The Texas Attorney General’s public breach list shows 76 filings from Houston-area organizations between October 30, 2025 and October 28, 2026, by our count, and 65 of them involved Social Security numbers. The list only covers breaches that touched 250 or more Texans, so the real number is higher.

Houston adds its own mix. Energy Corridor engineering firms, Medical Center practices, Ship Channel logistics shops, and Galleria professional offices all hold data an attacker can sell or lock, and none of them wants a 3 AM phone call about it.

Day to day, we run managed IT services in Houston, so MDR sits on top of the patching, backups, and sign-in rules we already manage. Detection works best on a tidy network, and it’s far less useful on one nobody has inventoried.

What Gets Watched

What Does MDR in Houston Actually Watch?

Coverage decides everything.

An MDR team can only act on what it can see. The cards below show the six places we watch, and the gaps between them are where attacks hide, because a team that watches laptops but not sign-ins will miss a very common way in.

Endpoints come first. EDR software on every laptop and server records what programs do, and the MDR team watches that record for the behavior that gives ransomware away, such as a process encrypting files at speed or a tool that quietly switches off the antivirus.

Two IT technicians in navy polos checking a printed device checklist beside a cart of business laptops in a Houston office supply room

Sign-ins come next. A login from a country you don’t operate in, a mailbox that suddenly forwards mail outside, or ten failed attempts followed by one success all look ordinary to the person who owns the account and loud to an analyst. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide tells organizations to log and monitor login attempts for password spraying and brute force for the same reason.

Email, network traffic, and cloud apps round it out. Phishing is a common way in, so the watch has to cover the inbox and not only the machine on the desk.

Coverage is a checklist and not a mystery, so ask any provider which of these six sources they watch and which ones they skip, and get the answer in writing along with the log retention period and what happens when a source goes quiet.

Who can see the data matters too, and if the answer is a brochure, move on. Our write-up on 24/7 security monitoring in Houston gets into the questions to ask.

The 6 Places MDR Should Be Watching

Laptops and Servers

EDR on every device, with analysts reading it. Odd programs, disabled antivirus, mass file changes.

Sign-ins and Identity

Impossible travel, repeated failures, new devices, and admin logins at strange hours.

Email

Phishing, forwarding rules, and mailboxes that start writing to strangers.

Network Traffic

Devices suddenly talking to places they have never talked to before.

Cloud Apps

Who shared what, from where, and which accounts suddenly act differently.

Firewall and Threat Feeds

Firewall events checked against current threat intelligence.

We see one mistake more than any other. Owners buy monitoring for the laptops they remember and forget the file server in the closet or the contractor account nobody closed, and an attacker only needs the one nobody listed. A free network assessment builds the list first.

The Rules

Which Rules Point Toward MDR in Houston?

Ransomware is the scary part, and our cybersecurity services in Houston cover the daily defense. The push toward round-the-clock monitoring usually comes out of a rulebook or a renewal form.

The FTC goes first. 16 CFR 314.4(d)(2) says the monitoring and testing a covered firm runs shall include continuous monitoring or periodic penetration testing. Without effective continuous monitoring, you owe an annual penetration test plus vulnerability assessments at least every six months. Tax preparers, mortgage brokers, and dealers that arrange financing fall under it, and MDR is the plain way to take the first option.

HIPAA reads softer. The Security Rule’s audit controls standard, 45 CFR 164.312(b), calls for mechanisms that record and examine activity in systems holding electronic patient information. It never says MDR and it never says 24/7. It does say somebody has to examine the record.

NIST sets the yardstick.

CSF 2.0 treats Detect as one of its core functions, and NIST SP 800-61 Revision 3, published in April 2025, ties incident response to that framework. Neither one is a law for a private company. Insurers and customers still quote them, so they’re the measuring stick your questionnaire will probably use. A vCISO can own that paperwork, and ours is covered in our vCISO services in Houston.

FTC Safeguards Rule

Continuous monitoring, or an annual test plus scans every 6 months.

HIPAA Audit Controls

Record and examine activity in systems that hold patient data.

NIST CSF 2.0 Detect

The framework insurers and customers quote when they ask about monitoring.

Insurance and Customer Contracts

No statute here. Just a renewal form or questionnaire asking who watches your endpoints.

Who sets these rules. We sell managed security, so read this list with that in mind. The monitoring terms above come from the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. They apply to your business no matter who watches its computers, and none of this is legal advice.

After the Alert

The Alert Takes Seconds. What Happens Next Is the Service.

An alert fires. Now what?

Honestly, the alert is the cheap part. Every security tool raises them, and most firms drown in them, so the value of MDR is the decision that follows, which is whether this one is real, what it touched, and what gets shut off right now.

We work in a fixed order. Detect it. Triage it. Contain it. Then find out how it got in, so the same door gets closed.

How Uprite Handles an Alert, Start to Finish

Detect

Analysts watch endpoints, sign-ins, email, network traffic, and cloud apps around the clock, nights, weekends, and holidays included.

Triage

Most alerts are noise. An analyst decides which ones are real before anybody gets woken up.

Contain

Confirmed threats get stopped, for example by isolating an infected laptop or disabling a compromised account. Every action is logged.

Investigate

We work out how the attacker got in and what they touched, then hand your team the facts in plain English.

Report

You get a dated record of what happened and what we did, useful for your auditor and your cyber insurer.

Review

The quarterly security review covers what the alerts taught us and what to patch or lock down next.

So does Uprite handle the whole incident?

Up to a point. Our analysts contain confirmed threats and keep the record. A bigger breach, with stolen data or a legal notice clock running, moves into our incident response services in Houston, and that’s a different scope of work.

Detection without a person to act on it is only a louder alarm.

Pick the Right Layer

EDR, SIEM, MDR, MSSP, and an In-House SOC Are Different Purchases

Quotes tend to blur these together.

They aren’t the same product, and the price gap is huge.

Five terms get mixed up. EDR is software on each device that records and blocks suspicious behavior, a SIEM collects logs from everywhere into one searchable place, MDR adds the people who read what those tools raise and act on it, an MSSP is the broader provider that runs the whole security watch with firewalls and compliance reporting included, and an in-house SOC is your own staff doing every one of those jobs around the clock.

What Each Option Answers

OptionWhat it doesWho watches, and what it costs
EDR softwareRecords and blocks suspicious behavior on each laptop and serverThe software. Nobody has to act on what it raises.
SIEMCollects logs from many systems into one searchable placeNobody until someone reads it
MDRAnalysts read the alerts, confirm real threats, and contain themAnalysts on shift, nights and weekends included
MSSPRuns the wider watch with firewall management, SIEM, threat intelligence, scanning, and reportingUprite, from $40 per user per month on MSSP Security Focus
In-house SOCYour own staff cover every shiftYour payroll, at least 5 analysts for 24/7 coverage by our estimate

EDR alone is a smoke detector. It’s cheap and it works, and at 3 AM nobody hears it unless somebody is listening.

MDR is the person who hears it. That’s the whole difference, and it’s why a separate piece, MDR vs EDR for Houston businesses, puts a price on it.

A SIEM is a library of logs. Useful, but somebody has to read it, and at a small firm that somebody usually doesn’t exist.

An in-house SOC suits a bank and strains a 70-person company, and the staffing math below shows why. If you’re weighing the middle road, SOC as a service for small businesses in Houston gets its own guide.

Buy in order, which means cover every device with EDR first, add the people who watch it second, and add the extras last, because skipping ahead gets you a console that nobody opens at three in the morning when it matters.

We start with who is watching.

By the Numbers

Pricing

What Does MDR Cost in Houston?

Uprite’s MDR starts at $40 per user per month inside MSSP Security Focus, which comes to $1,600 a month at 40 users.

We won’t hand you a market average, because we haven’t seen a Houston price list we’d trust. What we can post is our own rate, and it lives on our public pricing page, so your finance person can check it without a sales call.

Four things move a quote anywhere, namely how many users and devices are covered, which data sources feed the watch, whether response is included or only alerts, and what the contract says about after-hours calls. Press every provider on the third one. Our ranking of the best MDR providers in Houston shows which of eight firms put a response time in writing. Some only send an email.

Think about the alternative. Our own arithmetic puts a 24/7 in-house team at five analysts, and at the BLS mean wage of $126,880 that’s $634,400 a year in wages alone, before benefits, tools, and a manager. At 40 users our plan costs $19,200 a year, so building it yourself runs about 33 times higher.

Order matters. Cover your devices first, add the watch second, and buy extras last. If you want the long version, read what MDR costs in Houston, and see our cybersecurity cost guide for Houston for the line items around it.

Fully Managed IT starts at $138 per user per month and puts the security stack in the fee, while Co-Managed IT starts at $100 and suits teams that already have an IT person who wants engineers behind them on the hard calls.

Managed plans hold the rate through year one, nothing is hidden, and a 120-day satisfaction guarantee backs the work. Licensing and anything custom come on top, as they do on every Uprite plan.

Tell us who watches your network at night, and what they do when something fires.

We’ll tell you in writing where your coverage has gaps, what MDR would add, and what it would cost for your headcount.

Getting Started

How Does MDR Start With Uprite?

Onboarding works around your calendar. Nobody pushes new agents to laptops in the middle of tax season, at month-end close, or with a storm sitting in the Gulf, unless you ask us to, and we’ll move the dates whenever your week turns ugly.

Step 1. Map What You Own

Devices, servers, user accounts, cloud tenants, firewalls. You can’t watch what you haven’t listed, so this comes first, and our free network assessment was built for it.

Step 2. Put EDR on Every Device

Endpoint software goes on every laptop and server. Anything that can’t take it gets flagged, so the gap is on paper and not a surprise.

Step 3. Connect Sign-ins, Email, and the Network

Microsoft 365 sign-ins, mail flow, firewall logs, and cloud apps feed the watch. Admin accounts and multi-factor sign-in get cleaned up in the same pass.

Step 4. Agree on Who Gets the Call

Before the watch goes live, we write down who gets the call at 2 a.m., which actions our analysts can take on their own, and which ones need your okay.

Step 5. Watch, Report, and Review

The SOC watches around the clock, every action is logged, and the quarterly security review covers what the alerts taught us and what to fix next.

Timing depends on the mess. A 30-person firm that already knows its devices moves fast. A 120-person firm with a forgotten file server, a contractor account nobody closed, and two generations of antivirus needs cleanup first, and cleanup always takes longer than anyone guesses.

Who It Fits

Houston Businesses This Page Is Built For

Right fit
Greater Houston firms with roughly 25 to 200 staff, an IT person or two, and nobody watching alerts overnight
Tax preparers, mortgage brokers, and dealers that arrange financing, working toward the FTC Safeguards monitoring requirement
Texas Medical Center practices, clinics, and their business associates documenting HIPAA audit controls
Energy Corridor and Galleria professional firms asked about 24/7 monitoring on a cyber insurance renewal
Companies in The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Katy, or Clear Lake with laptops, Microsoft 365, and no security team
Houston companies that already own endpoint protection and a firewall and want people reading what those tools raise

See yourself in that list? A short call is enough. Bring your last cyber insurance questionnaire if you have it.

Before You Buy

What Holds Houston Businesses Back From MDR?

4 objections come up on almost every first call.

“We already have antivirus.”

Good, keep it. Antivirus blocks known bad files, while MDR is people watching for behavior that isn’t on any list, like a valid login doing something strange. Our EDR vs MDR vs XDR comparison shows where each one stops.

“Microsoft already watches our tenant.”

Microsoft raises alerts, and what happens next depends on your license and who’s on call. Ask who disables the compromised account at 3 AM, and if the honest answer is that you do, from your phone, in a parking lot, then you own a tool and not a service.

“We’re too small to be a target.”

The Texas Attorney General’s list says otherwise. Of the 51 Houston-area filings involving fewer than 5,000 Texans, 40 included Social Security numbers. Attackers don’t pick by headcount. They pick by what’s easy to reach.

“Our IT provider already does this.”

Fair question, and worth asking in writing. Who reads alerts overnight, what are they allowed to shut off, and how fast do they answer? Plenty of IT plans send alerts and stop there. On Uprite’s own plans, IT Essentials sends alerts without responding, while Fully Managed IT and MSSP Security Focus include the response.

What Is Managed Detection and Response in Houston?

Managed detection and response in Houston means a security team watches your devices, sign-ins, email, network, and cloud apps around the clock, decides which alerts are real, and contains confirmed threats such as an infected laptop or a hijacked account, with a dated record of every action. Uprite delivers it through MSSP Security Focus from $40 per user per month, across Greater Houston, including the Galleria, downtown, the Texas Medical Center, the Energy Corridor, Clear Lake, The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Katy, Pasadena, and Baytown.

I had been having trouble with an IT matter that I didn't think would be fixed but Arvin Ebueng from Upright took his time with me and worked with me until we were able to resolve the issue. The issue was an internal issue with the way the program was written, but Arvin came up with a great work around so that I am now able to do what I need to do at my job. Long story short, he got me access to both things that I need access to simultaneously and daily. Thanks 😊 Arvin, you are much appreciated 👏 💐 🥳.

FAQ

What Houston Businesses Ask About Managed Detection and Response

What does managed detection and response in Houston include?

MDR includes 24/7 monitoring of your devices, sign-ins, email, network traffic, and cloud apps, analysts who decide which alerts are real, and containment of confirmed threats. At Uprite it sits inside MSSP Security Focus, along with firewall management, a SIEM, threat intelligence, vulnerability scanning, and a quarterly security review.

How much does MDR cost in Houston?

Uprite’s MDR starts at $40 per user per month inside MSSP Security Focus, or $1,600 a month for 40 users. Licensing and custom work come on top, and messy environments cost more than clean ones. A 24/7 in-house team of five analysts would run about $634,400 a year in wages alone at the BLS Houston mean.

What is the difference between MDR and EDR?

EDR is software that records and blocks suspicious behavior on a device, and MDR adds the analysts who read what it raises and act on it. EDR alone alerts into a console. MDR puts a person behind the console, around the clock. Our EDR vs MDR vs XDR guide covers where XDR fits.

Do we need MDR for compliance?

Sometimes. The FTC Safeguards Rule asks for continuous monitoring, or annual penetration tests plus scans every six months, and HIPAA wants activity records examined. Neither one names MDR. What reaches you depends on the data you hold, and contracts and insurers can add monitoring duties that no regulation requires.

Who responds when an alert fires at 3 AM?

Analysts on shift read it, decide whether it’s real, and contain confirmed threats, for example by isolating a laptop or disabling an account. Every action is logged. Anything that grows into a breach moves into our incident response services in Houston.

Can MDR stop ransomware?

It can stop an attack early, and nobody honest promises it stops every one. Analysts watch for the behavior that gives ransomware away, such as mass file changes or disabled security tools, and contain the device fast. Tested backups are the other half, because containment limits the damage and backups cover whatever slips through.

Does MDR replace our IT team or our antivirus?

No. MDR sits on top of your IT team and your endpoint software and replaces neither one. It adds the people who read the alerts. Keep your IT person for the printers, the users, and the vendors, and let the SOC take the 3 AM alert.

What does MDR actually watch?

Laptops, servers, sign-ins, email, network traffic, and cloud apps. Coverage matters more than the brand, because a team that can’t see sign-ins will miss a very common way in. Ask any provider for the source list in writing, and compare it with the six cards above.

Does cyber insurance require MDR?

It depends on your application and your broker. Expect questions about endpoint detection, multi-factor sign-in, and who responds after hours. Read the wording, answer honestly, and ask whether a written coverage list from your provider satisfies it.

How quickly does Uprite respond when MDR finds something urgent?

About 5 minutes on average across every ticket and priority. That’s a measured average, not a contract promise. A confirmed threat on a device gets contained first and explained second, and a bigger incident moves into incident response.
