MDR vs EDR: What Houston Businesses Get for the Extra Cost

MDR costs more than EDR because it adds people, not software. The extra money pays for analysts who watch your alerts around the clock and act on them, which an EDR license on its own does not include.

Both products put the same kind of sensor on your laptops and servers. What differs is who responds when it raises an alert at 2 a.m. This guide puts a price on that difference for a Houston business with 25 to 200 people, and our page on managed detection and response in Houston covers the service itself.

EDR is software that flags trouble on your devices, and MDR adds a team that responds around the clock. For a 100-person Houston firm, Microsoft’s EDR costs about $3,600 a year, a monitored plan with response starts near $48,000, and 24/7 coverage from your own analysts runs past $634,000 in wages alone. Buy MDR if nobody on your staff can act on alerts overnight.

What is the real difference between MDR and EDR?

EDR (endpoint detection and response) is software that records activity on laptops and servers, flags suspicious behavior, and can isolate a device. MDR (managed detection and response) is a service in which outside analysts operate that software for you 24 hours a day and take action when something looks like an attack.

We cover the wider set of terms, including XDR, SIEM, and identity detection, in our EDR vs MDR vs XDR guide. This post is only about what the price difference buys.

What does the extra cost of MDR actually pay for?

It pays for labor and for the authority to act. The table lines up what comes with an EDR license against what a managed service adds, so you can check a quote against it line by line.

What happensEDR license aloneMDR service
Spots suspicious behavior on a deviceYesYes
A person reads the alertYour IT team, when they see itProvider analysts, every alert
Someone is awake on a Saturday at 2 a.m.Only if you staff itIncluded in the monthly price
Isolates the infected laptop without calling you firstRarely set up that wayStandard, if the contract grants the authority
Hunts for threats no tool flaggedNoUsually, at the better providers
Monthly report of what was caught and closedA dashboard you read yourselfA written report from the provider

The isolation row is where contracts differ most. Some let analysts cut an infected laptop off the network immediately, and others require them to reach you for approval first, which can take hours when the call comes in overnight.

Bar chart of a 168-hour week showing 45 hours covered by a team working 8 to 5 on weekdays and 123 hours, or 73 percent of the week, with nobody reading alerts

How many hours of the week does your own team cover?

A week has 168 hours, and a team that works 8 to 5 on weekdays is at its desks for about 45 of them. That leaves roughly 123 hours, or 73% of the week, with nobody reading alerts unless someone carries a pager. Sophos analyzed 661 incident response and MDR cases from November 2024 to October 2025 and reported that 88% of ransomware payloads were deployed outside business hours.

Houston adds a seasonal factor. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and during a storm the same small IT team ends up handling phones, remote access, and staff safety, so nobody has time to watch a console.

What would 24/7 coverage cost if you built it yourself?

One analyst covers about 40 hours a week, and 168 divided by 40 is 4.2, so continuous coverage takes at least 5 people once you allow for vacations, sick days, and turnover. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 2,110 information security analysts in the Houston metro area, with a mean annual wage of $126,880 and a median of $126,370, according to its May 2025 wage estimates. Five analysts at the mean wage is $634,400 a year before benefits, tools, and training.

The table prices the same 100-person firm four ways. The prices come from published lists, and the yearly column is our arithmetic.

Option for 100 users or devicesWho responds at nightYearly cost
Microsoft Defender for Business at $3 per user per monthNobody unless you staff it$3,600
CrowdStrike Falcon Pro at $99.99 per deviceNobody unless you staff it$9,999
Uprite MSSP Security Focus, starting at $40 per user per monthUprite’s 24/7 SOCFrom $48,000
5 in-house analysts at the Houston mean wageYour own team$634,400 before benefits and tools

The first two rows are licenses, and both vendors publish their prices, with Microsoft listing Defender for Business and CrowdStrike listing its Falcon bundles. CrowdStrike does not publish a price for its managed tier, so we left it out. The third row is our own starting rate from the pricing page, and licensing is billed on top of it.

Bar chart of yearly cost for 100 users, 3,600 dollars for Microsoft Defender for Business, 9,999 dollars for CrowdStrike Falcon Pro, 48,000 dollars and up for a monitored plan with response, and 634,400 dollars in wages for 5 in-house analysts

Compared with the CrowdStrike license, a managed plan adds about $38,000 a year for this firm. It also costs roughly one thirteenth of the in-house team, which is the comparison most owners skip when they react to the monthly number. For the endpoint side of the bill, see MDR cost in Houston.

Is MDR worth the extra cost for a Houston business?

It comes down to who responds to an alert at 3 a.m. on a holiday weekend. If a named person is on call and can isolate a laptop from their phone, EDR may be enough. If alerts only go to an inbox, nobody is watching during the hours attackers prefer. The table matches common setups to what we would buy.

Your setupWhat we’d buyReason
15 people or fewer, one office, Microsoft 365 Business Premium already licensed, and an owner or IT lead who checks alerts every nightThe Defender EDR you already ownIt costs nothing extra and a named person is awake
1 to 3 IT staff and nobody on call overnightMDRAlerts at 2 a.m. have no owner
A cyber insurance questionnaire or a client contract asks about 24/7 monitoringMDRYou need a provider who can put the coverage in writing
An internal team of 4 or more with a night rotation that worksEDR plus a rented SOC for the gapsYou keep control of the day shift
An alert-only plan with no response, like our IT Essentials tierMove to a plan that includes responseAn alert that nobody acts on is only a log entry

The last row describes one of our own plans. IT Essentials runs the Microsoft Defender stack with alerting only, and it is not built for overnight response, while the plans described on our managed security services in Houston page include the 24/7 SOC.

IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach report puts the global average at $4.99 million, a record. Large companies pull that average up, so a 100-person firm should not budget around it. The Texas notification rule is more relevant. When a breach affects 250 or more Texans, the Texas Attorney General must be notified within 30 days of determining that it happened, and every extra day an attacker spends in your network can widen what has to be reported.

How do you compare MDR quotes without getting burned?

Quotes vary because providers bundle different things, so ask each one the same six questions, including us. To see how Houston firms compare side by side, read our ranking of the best MDR providers in Houston.

What Houston owners ask about MDR vs EDR cost

Is MDR worth the extra cost over EDR?

Yes, when nobody on your staff can act on alerts at night. EDR finds the problem, and MDR supplies the person who deals with it before the weekend is over. You can skip it if a trained employee is on call every night, but check that this is true in practice and not just on paper, because an on-call rotation that depends on one person tends to break the first time that person is on vacation.

How much more does MDR cost than EDR?

For a 100-person firm the gap is about $38,000 a year against CrowdStrike Falcon Pro at $9,999, and about $44,000 against Microsoft’s $3,600 EDR, when the managed option is our MSSP Security Focus plan from $48,000. Licensing is billed on top of our starting rates, and final pricing depends on your environment.

Can Microsoft Defender replace MDR?

No. Defender for Business is software that detects and can disrupt attacks automatically, but it does not put a person on your alerts overnight.

Does a 2-person IT team need MDR?

Almost always. Two people cannot cover 168 hours a week, and about 123 of those hours fall outside a standard 8 to 5 schedule. That is before vacation, sick days, or a storm week that pulls both of them onto other work.

What would a 24/7 security team cost to build in Houston?

At least $634,400 a year in wages alone. Covering every hour takes about 5 analysts, and the BLS puts the Houston mean wage for information security analysts at $126,880. Benefits, a SIEM, training, and the cost of replacing someone who quits all come on top of that figure.

Does Uprite include EDR licenses in its MDR pricing?

It depends on the plan. Licensing is billed on top of our starting rates, so we quote after reviewing your environment and write down what is included, which lets you compare it with any other proposal item by item.

Send us your current EDR license and the last quote you received. We will show you in writing which hours of the week nobody is watching, what closing that gap costs for your headcount, and whether you need it at all. We usually reply within 5 minutes.
