Houston-area organizations filed 73 data breach notices with the Texas Attorney General in the 12 months to September 21, 2026, affecting 1,154,263 Texans. And 28 of those notices covered fewer than 1,000 people.
Texas makes this countable. Under Texas Business and Commerce Code section 521.053, any organization whose breach touches 250 or more Texans has to notify the Attorney General within 30 days, and the AG publishes the list. We pulled the full Texas AG data breach listing on September 24, 2026 and kept only organizations based in the Houston metro.

Two things stand out. The median Houston filer reported 59 days between the breach starting and anyone noticing it, and two in three took longer than a month, which means most of these companies were compromised for weeks while email, payroll and billing kept running as normal. And 64 of the 73 notices involved Social Security numbers, which is the kind of data that turns an incident into notification letters, credit monitoring bills and, sooner or later, a lawsuit.
One honest caveat. Filers enter their own dates, and some record the day they confirmed what was taken instead of the day trouble started, so read the 59 days as a rough guide. The list also leaves out any breach that touched fewer than 250 Texans, so smaller incidents never show up at all.
