New Braunfels vs San Antonio IT Provider: Does a Comal County Business Need a Local MSP?

A Comal County business doesn’t need a New Braunfels address on its IT provider, but it does need written on-site terms, because a San Antonio technician drives 37 to 43 minutes to reach New Braunfels before traffic. A local shop is closer. It’s usually smaller, too.

New Braunfels owners tend to ask this early, usually right after they ask where our office is and do the I-35 math in their head. Will you actually show up? It’s a fair worry, and it deserves numbers instead of a promise. This post sits under our guide to managed IT services in New Braunfels, and covers 1 decision. Local or not? We routed drives from our San Antonio office and from New Braunfels City Hall to 10 points around Comal County, then pulled the state’s congestion list for the I-35 stretch in between. A local office wins most of the drives. That part isn’t close.

Uprite works out of 11831 Radium St. on San Antonio’s north side, and we don’t have an office in Comal County. Free-flow routing puts New Braunfels City Hall 37 minutes from us and Gruene 43. A provider based at New Braunfels City Hall would be closer to 8 of 9 shared points, by about 18 minutes on average. Census data shows 54 of the 63 computer services establishments in Comal County employ fewer than 5 people. So that’s the real trade. Drive time against bench depth.

What’s the Real Difference Between a New Braunfels and a San Antonio IT Provider?

The difference is distance on one side and staff depth on the other. A New Braunfels IT provider can reach downtown, Gruene, and Creekside in 4 to 13 minutes, though Canyon Lake and Bulverde run 31 to 34. A San Antonio provider drives 37 to 43 minutes to New Braunfels and 53 to Canyon Lake, but it tends to have more people on the help desk, on security work, and on nights and weekends when something breaks.

Neither is a ranking. Each is a cost. You just pay it at a different moment. With a local shop, you pay when its 2 technicians are both on other jobs. With us, you pay in drive time on the day a switch dies.

Federal job data doesn’t even treat them as separate markets. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes 1 job count for the whole San Antonio-New Braunfels metro, 1,189,000 nonfarm jobs in September 2026 on a preliminary basis, covering Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, and 5 more counties. New Braunfels is in the metro’s name. Your customers, your vendors, and plenty of your hires probably cross the county line every week, so it’s fair to ask whether your IT support really has to stop at it.

How Long Does a San Antonio Technician Take to Reach New Braunfels?

We ran the routes on October 28, 2026, with the public Open Source Routing Machine, which plans trips over OpenStreetMap road data. Every trip starts at our office on Radium Street. Each one ends at a city hall, a courthouse, or a well-known address, so no place gets a flattering pick. OSRM assumes empty roads. Real mornings are worse.

Bar chart of free-flow drive times from 11831 Radium St in San Antonio to 10 points around Comal County, from 24 minutes to Bulverde City Hall to 55 minutes to Seguin City Hall, based on OSRM routing run October 28, 2026

Gruene Hall43 minutes31.9 miles
Canyon Lake (Census place point)53 minutes32.0 miles
San Marcos City Hall54 minutes45.4 miles
Seguin City Hall55 minutes41.3 miles

Downtown New Braunfels is a 37-minute run with nobody else on the road. Creekside and Gruene add a few more. Canyon Lake is the surprise on this list, because it’s only 32 miles out, but the last stretch is 2-lane Hill Country road and the routing averages about 36 miles an hour. Maps undersell it.

Bulverde flips the pattern. So do Garden Ridge and Schertz, which sit on our side of New Braunfels and come in under half an hour.

Would a New Braunfels-Based IT Company Get There Faster?

Usually, yes. We reran the same routing from New Braunfels City Hall, standing in for a provider with an office in town, to the 9 points that aren’t one of the 2 starting addresses.

Dot chart comparing free-flow minutes to 9 Comal-area points from 11831 Radium St in San Antonio and from New Braunfels City Hall, with averages of 40 and 22 minutes and Bulverde the only point closer to San Antonio

New Braunfels wins 8 of 9. Inside the city itself the gap is about half an hour each way, and I’m not going to dress that up. Bulverde is the only point that favors us, by about 10 minutes. Garden Ridge and Schertz are close to a tie.

But an office address is where a technician parks at night. During the day that person is at a client in Seguin, or stuck behind a wreck on Loop 337, or on the phone with a carrier, and the drive starts from wherever they happen to be. It’s a best case. For both sides.

And a New Braunfels business with a second site in San Antonio flips the math. New Braunfels City Hall to the Bexar County Courthouse is 42 minutes. Somebody drives I-35 regardless.

What Does I-35 Traffic Do to That Drive?

It stretches it. The state even measures where. Every year TxDOT and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute publish the 100 most congested road segments in Texas, ranked by the hours of delay drivers lose on each mile. In the 2025 list, 2 back-to-back segments of I-35 sit right on the route from our office to New Braunfels, and a technician headed your way can’t really avoid either one of them.

I-35 segment (2025 list, all vehicles)CountyStatewide rankYearly delay per mile, person-hours
Loop 1604 to Loop 410, northeast San AntonioBexar44 (29 in 2024)354,461
FM 3009 (Natural Bridge Caverns Road) to Loop 1604Guadalupe73 (44 in 2024)216,720

Both segments improved on the list this year. Don’t read too much into it. They’re inside a work zone, so the ranks move for reasons that have nothing to do with your commute. TxDOT’s I-35 NEX Central project is building 3 elevated lanes in each direction between I-410 and FM 3009, 2 mainlanes plus 1 HOV lane, at a design-build cost of $1.5 billion, and the department lists completion as late 2027. Until those lanes open, a morning dispatch from San Antonio to New Braunfels runs through about 8 miles of construction that the state already ranks among its worst roads.

Direction isn’t split out. A technician heading north at 8 a.m. is likely going against the heaviest commute into San Antonio, which helps. A 5 p.m. return doesn’t. Treat the ranking as a warning. It isn’t a forecast.

How Many IT Companies Are Actually Based in Comal County?

Not many. And they’re small. The Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns for 2023 counts 63 establishments in Comal County under computer systems design and related services, the federal category that covers IT support firms along with software developers and consultants. Of those 63, 54 had fewer than 5 employees. Just 4 had 10 to 19.

County (CBP 2023)Computer services establishmentsFewer than 5 employeesShare under 5
Comal635486%
Guadalupe262181%
Bexar59741469%

A lot of those 54 are 1-person consultancies and freelance developers who’d never take a help desk contract. That’s my read of the category, not something the census splits out. Still, the shape matters. When the provider is 3 people, the person who answers your 2 a.m. alarm is the same person who installed your firewall that afternoon.

Both sides are growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics QCEW program, which counts payroll locations a little differently, had 122 private computer services locations in Comal in 2025, up from 88 in 2020. They averaged about 6 jobs each. Private employers overall went from 4,141 locations to 5,192 over the same years, up 25%, while private jobs grew 32%. The Census Bureau’s 2025 county estimates put Comal at 209,166 residents, about 28% above its 2020 estimate. Companies here keep crossing the size where 1 IT person, inside or outside, stops being enough, and that’s usually the moment the local-versus-San Antonio question lands on an owner’s desk.

Which Kind of Provider Fits Which Comal County Business?

Sort yourself by what you own, how many people you have, and how often something physical breaks.

Your situationBetter fitWhy
Under 10 people, cloud email and files, no server or rackA small local shop, or a remote-only planAlmost nothing needs hands, and a good local technician knows your building
10 to 150 people, a network closet, a firewall, maybe a serverA San Antonio MSP with written on-site termsYou need 24/7 monitoring and security work that a 2- or 3-person shop can’t staff, plus a visit plan for hardware
A site in New Braunfels and another in San Antonio or SchertzA metro-wide provider1 contract, 1 help desk, and nobody arguing about which office is “out of area”
An in-house IT person already on siteCo-managed ITYour person handles hands in the building, the MSP covers nights, security, and vacations
Seasonal peaks, like hospitality around Gruene or Wurstfest weeksWhoever writes your change freeze into the agreementDistance matters less than a patch schedule that stays off your busiest weekends

People skip the co-managed row. If you already pay someone in the building, keep them. Our page on co-managed IT in San Antonio explains how that split works, and it’s often a cheaper way to get both a local face and a deep bench.

Which Problems Actually Need Someone in Your Building?

Fewer than you’d think. I’d put them in 4 groups.

  • A failed switch, firewall, or access point. Somebody has to rack it and move the cables.
  • Cabling. New drops, a cut line after a remodel, a mystery cable nobody can trace.
  • A new circuit or a carrier handoff, when the internet provider needs someone on site to meet their technician.
  • Moves and new suites. Racks, wireless surveys, and workstations staged before the lease starts.

Password resets, Outlook problems, VPN errors, and printer queues close faster from a desk than from I-35, and they’re the everyday tickets on any help desk, ours included. Laptops are a closer call. A dead one often doesn’t need a person at all. With Windows Autopilot, Microsoft says the user only has to connect a new PC to a network and sign in. So a configured replacement can ship to Gruene by courier while the broken one comes back, and nobody has to sit on I-35 for the sake of a laptop.

The biggest single cut to on-site wait in New Braunfels isn’t a closer office. It’s a spare switch. Configured, on your shelf. That spare turns a 40-minute emergency into a quick swap your office manager can do with a technician on the phone, and it works the same whether your provider is 4 minutes away or 40. Our post on onsite vs remote IT support in San Antonio has the longer sorting rule, including the compliance cases where someone has to be in the room.

What Should You Get in Writing From Any IT Provider?

Ask every provider. Us included.

  1. What’s the arrival commitment for my exact address, separate from the response time?
  2. Does that commitment assume rush hour on I-35, or an empty road?
  3. Which plan includes on-site visits, and what does a visit cost on the plans that don’t?
  4. Who covers nights, weekends, and the weeks your lead technician is on vacation?
  5. Will you pre-stage a replacement before driving, so 1 trip closes the ticket?
  6. How will you schedule patching around our busy season?

Response isn’t arrival. Our first response averages about 5 minutes across all tickets, measured on our own help desk, and every ticket is triaged inside 10 minutes. That’s an average, not a per-ticket promise, and it says nothing about a car. We don’t publish an arrival time for New Braunfels. Too much depends on your street. And the hour. Our breakdown of IT support response time in San Antonio covers how to read the clocks in a contract.

Price comes next. Fully Managed IT is the plan with on-site work included, starting at $138 per user per month on our published pricing, and your rate is locked for the first year. IT Essentials, starting at $91, is remote only and built for teams under 12. Co-Managed IT starts at $100. The pricing page says remote-first plans can be upgraded to include on-site service, but we don’t publish that upgrade price, so get it in writing. Our guide to what managed IT costs in New Braunfels runs the seat math for Comal County.

Questions Comal County Owners Ask About Local vs San Antonio IT Support

Is there an Uprite office in Comal County?

No, Uprite’s technicians work out of 11831 Radium St. on San Antonio’s north side, and there’s no Uprite office in Comal County. Free-flow routing puts that office 37 minutes from New Braunfels City Hall and 24 minutes from Bulverde City Hall.

How long does it take a San Antonio technician to reach Gruene or Creekside?

A San Antonio technician needs 41 to 43 minutes to reach Gruene or Creekside on clear roads. That’s what OSRM routing gave us from Radium Street to Resolute Health Hospital in Creekside and to Gruene Hall, and rush hour on I-35 adds more until TxDOT finishes the NEX Central lanes, listed for late 2027.

Is a New Braunfels IT company always faster on-site?

A New Braunfels-based IT company is usually faster on-site, but not always. A provider at New Braunfels City Hall beat our San Antonio office to 8 of 9 Comal-area points, by about 18 minutes on average. Bulverde was the exception. A small shop is only fast when its technician is free, so ask who actually comes when that person is already on another job across town or out sick for the week.

Which Uprite plan includes on-site visits in New Braunfels?

Fully Managed IT includes on-site work, starting at $138 per user per month with on-site and cloud infrastructure management. IT Essentials at $91 is remote only. Our pricing page says remote-first plans can be upgraded to include on-site service.

Can we keep our in-house IT person and still use a San Antonio MSP?

Yes, keeping an in-house IT person alongside a San Antonio MSP is called co-managed IT. Your person keeps the hands-on work in the building, and the MSP adds monitoring, security, after-hours coverage, and backup when your person is out. It suits a company that already has 1 IT generalist on payroll and doesn’t want to lose what that person knows about the building.

Will the I-35 construction make support slower?

Yes, the I-35 NEX Central construction can slow hardware visits from San Antonio until the new lanes open, listed for late 2027. The work zone runs from I-410 to FM 3009, which covers the 2 segments that TxDOT’s 2025 congestion list ranks 44th and 73rd in Texas. Remote fixes don’t touch the highway, so only hardware visits feel it.

Does it matter whether our building is on the Comal or Guadalupe side?

Which county your building sits in doesn’t change your IT support. New Braunfels spans both counties, and the help desk, the plan, and the on-site terms are the same on either side of the line. Where the county shows up is carrier availability and circuit lead times, which vary by address, so check yours before a move.

Where Should a New Braunfels Business Start?

Start with your own address and a list of what in your building would need hands. Then compare a local shop and a San Antonio MSP on the same written questions above. We support Comal County from the office behind our IT support in San Antonio, and the San Antonio line is (210) 366-4811.

Send us your address and the equipment that would need a technician, and we’ll show you the drive time, the plan that fits, and what on-site visits look like for your office.
