All businesses should be on high alert amid the Russia and Ukraine crisis, no matter how small. While Russia may not be directly targeting your SMB, they may be targeting larger organizations your business depends on to remain operational. A week before Russia invaded Ukraine, the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a Shields Up warning, stating that the Russia–Ukraine crisis could impact organizations within the U.S. The CISA warns that:
“Every organization—large and small—must be prepared to respond to disruptive cyber activity.”
Following the CISA’s Shields Up guidance, all businesses should secure remote access to their networks with MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication). They should also install anti-virus/malware software, test backups to guarantee restoration of lost data should a cyberattack occur, and ensure all systems are up-to-date.
The CISA notes that they have no credible information regarding an immediate threat from Russia against the United States, but cautions all organizations to still “plan for the worst.”
“Senior management should ensure that exigent measures can be taken to protect your organization’s most critical assets in case of an intrusion, including disconnecting high-impact parts of the network if necessary.”
CEOs and corporate leaders should have concrete plans documented and ready to implement should their business experience a cybersecurity breach. Extensive planning, repeated testing, and security education and training for all employees are strongly encouraged.
